It’s been a sunshine filled summer and spending time outdoors has truly been status quo. In recent years we’ve seen dramatic outdoor living spaces gain a place of prominence in the must’s of homeowners. Back yard “stay-cations” are on the rise so it’s nice to have a place of your own to relax and unwind, that has a spa feel without the price tag. We’ve created a short list of tips that should work for both pro and novice DIY’s.
- Bring the comforts of home outdoors by creating little living rooms on porches and patios. Arrange seating as you would in a family room to encourage gathering for good conversation and relaxation. Keep in mind that high quality patio furniture is worth paying for both in durability and aesthetic.
- Expand the interior to the exterior make a small kitchen feel spacious with French doors that lead out to an alfresco dining area. Patio doors in all Homes by DeSantis models can be easily upgraded to elegant French doors.
- Excite your neutral patio furniture with pops of color using cushions and pillows covered in vibrant outdoor fabric. If you are feeling handy you can make simple cushion covers on your own. All thumbs with a sewing machine? Bright cushions are easy to find at stores like Home Sense, or even Canadian Tire. (Check out some hot colour trends @ http://tinyurl.com/c97ogzb)
- Invest in perennials rather than new plants every year. Chosen well, some grasses, bushes and trees provide all-season interest. Prepare proper planting beds. The right soil conditions ensure that your investment in plant material will pay off!
Now get busy! Summer will be over before you know it.
